"Is this soft silk or Kanchipuram silk?" is one of the most common questions we hear at our shop. Both are beautiful South Indian sarees, but they differ in fabric, weight, price and the occasions they suit best. This guide explains the difference simply, so you can choose the right saree with confidence.

What Is a Kanchipuram Silk Saree?

Kanchipuram (Kanjivaram) silk sarees come from the town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Genuine Kanchipuram sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk with real zari, are heavy and lustrous, and are traditionally worn for weddings. Kanchipuram silk has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, and genuine pieces are expensive because of the pure silk and zari used.

What Is a Soft Silk Saree?

Soft silk sarees are lighter, smoother and more flexible. Depending on the type, they may be made from silk, silk blends or silk-look yarns, and they usually use lighter zari. The result is a saree that drapes easily, feels comfortable for long hours and costs much less. Elampillai near Salem is one of the best-known centres for soft silk sarees.

Soft Silk vs Kanchipuram Silk: Key Differences

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose soft silk if you want a rich festive look for poojas, functions or Diwali, need something comfortable for long hours, or are buying gifts on a budget.
  • Choose Kanchipuram silk if you want a bridal or heirloom saree and your budget allows for pure silk.
  • Want the Kanchi look for less? Kanchi-style pattu and semi silk sarees give a similar traditional look at an affordable price – ideal for wedding guests.

Our Picks

Please note: our Kanchi-style and semi silk sarees are inspired by Kanchipuram designs and are not pure Kanchipuram silk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is soft silk real silk?

It depends on the saree. Some soft silk sarees contain silk, while others use blends or silk-look yarns. Always read the product description, and ask the seller if you are unsure.

Which is better for a wedding guest?

Soft silk or Kanchi-style sarees are a great choice for guests – they look grand, are comfortable for long ceremonies and cost far less.

How can I identify a genuine Kanchipuram saree?

Buy from trusted sellers, check for the Silk Mark label where available, and expect a heavy saree with a premium price. A very low price is usually a sign that the saree is Kanchi-style rather than pure Kanchipuram silk.
