How to Care for Soft Silk Sarees: 10 Simple Tips
A soft silk saree can stay beautiful for years if you look after it well. The good news is that soft silk is easier to care for than heavy pure silk. Follow these simple tips to keep the colour bright, the zari shining and the fabric soft.
10 Tips to Care for Your Soft Silk Saree
1. Dry clean the first wash
New silk and silk-look sarees can release colour in the first wash. A dry clean the first time is the safest choice.
2. Hand wash gently in cold water
After the first wash, you can hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo. Do not soak for long.
3. Wash the zari and body carefully
Do not scrub or twist zari borders and pallus. Gently swish the saree in water instead.
4. Never wring it
Wringing damages the weave and the zari. Roll the saree in a dry towel and press to remove extra water.
5. Dry in the shade
Strong sunlight fades colours. Dry your saree flat or on a hanger in a shaded, airy place.
6. Iron on low heat
Use a low "silk" setting and iron on the reverse side, or place a thin cotton cloth over the zari.
7. Avoid spraying perfume directly
Perfume and deodorant can stain silk and tarnish zari. Apply them before you wear the saree and let them dry.
8. Store in a cotton or muslin cloth
Wrap each saree in a soft cotton cloth instead of plastic, which traps moisture.
9. Refold every few months
Silk can tear along fold lines over time. Refold your saree in a different way every two to three months.
10. Keep moths away naturally
Use neem leaves or cloves in your wardrobe rather than placing naphthalene balls directly on the saree.
Removing Common Stains
- Oil or food: Dab (do not rub) with a little talcum powder, leave it for a few hours, then brush off and dry clean if needed.
- Turmeric or kumkum: Take the saree to a dry cleaner as soon as possible and mention the stain.
- Water marks: Lightly dampen the whole area and let it dry evenly in the shade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I machine wash a soft silk saree?
We do not recommend it. A gentle hand wash or dry cleaning keeps the fabric and zari in the best condition.

Only when needed. After wearing, air it in the shade for a few hours before folding it away.
How do I keep zari from turning black?
Store the saree wrapped in cotton, away from moisture and perfume, and refold it regularly.
